Build a flexible e-commerce website with layout options that are not available in a standard out of the box e-commerce package. Keep the site design very clean to show off the superb designed wooden sunglasses the client would be selling. Make the site responsive for all resolutions, whether it’s viewed on an iPad, smartphone or a large desktop screen. Have the entire site be editable by the client in an easy-to-use interface. And most importantly, keep it inexpensive!
We used the Joomla CMS and the HikaShop shopping cart, a Joomla component. By using an integrated component, there is only one interface for the client to learn and no repeating monthly charges that so many shopping carts impose on the client. Also, since both the shopping cart and the Joomla framework we used have open source code, we were free to modify the code to fit the customer’s layout and feature list as needed. Building a responsive website (a site that scales and rearranges itself on the fly to whatever device it is viewed on) takes a little bit of extra work. To keep the cost down, we used an excellent open source response framework that is fully supported by one of the largest German template developers. With this starting point we already had the responsive portion built and rock solid. With some finesse from one of our designers, we had the clean website design complete and then it was on to the code monkeys to make it all come together. By choosing the right pieces to the puzzle we were able to meet all of the client’s criteria and stay on budget. The client is able to manage their inventory and sales through the back-end administration area.
