We were approached by Furry Friends and asked if we would be willing to do a pro-bono website update for their organization. Their current site was messy, outdated, and very difficult to keep updated. In order to attract donors and corporate sponsors, they needed a professional-looking site, but they also needed something friendly and easy-to-navigate for potential pet owners. Given the lack of computer skills among their volunteers, they also needed us to be willing to keep the site up-to-date and make weekly edits to the cat listing and pet showing schedule.
Since Karen agreed to build the site completely on her own time and didn’t yet have a lot of Joomla experience, she choose to build a static site from the ground up based on a completely original interface design. In order to provide a way to display and manage the adoptable cat list each week, she installed a shopping cart database and then completely customized the code and adapted it for use on the website as a searchable cat database. By modifing the functionality, she was able to maintain a back-end administration area from the shopping cart, as well as integrate features such as designating a cat of the week to display on the home page, and flagging which cats would be on display at PetSmart each week.
Since Furry Friends now has a need for a calendar system and a blog for news and articles, Karen plans to eventually transition the entire site to a Joomla CMS for more flexibility and easier administration.
